4 wetlands of the country got new life

According to the economic reporter of Fars News Agency, the review of satellite data on the percentage of the country’s wetlands shows that a suitable situation has been created in several wetlands in the country. Based on this, the Shadgan lagoon located in Khuzestan has been filled with 27.8% according to the latest satellite images, and 785 square kilometers of the surface of this lake now has water. The filling index of Shadgan lagoon has experienced a growth of 75% over the past year.

In addition to the Shadgan wetland, the Shimbar wetland in this province is now 5% full and this wetland was without water during the last year. The Bakhtegan lagoon has also gained a new life over the past year and has faced a 35% increase in water level. Based on this, now 9.7 square kilometers of this wetland is full of water.

* The cattle got new life

During the past year, as a result of rainfall and also the provision of environmental rights in Gavkhoni wetland, this wetland, which was without water last year, has now experienced water withdrawal of 5.8 square kilometers.

In this regard, Abdur Rasool Hariri, an expert in water resources management, in an interview with Fars reporter, said: The provision of environmental rights for wetlands last year caused some of these environmental landscapes, which have an important effect on the stability of ecosystem conditions, to face significant water withdrawal. .

* Reasons for increasing the water level in wetlands

According to Fars report, the wetlands are mainly located at the end of the catchment basins, and the changes in climate conditions in recent years, along with excessive water harvesting, especially in the agricultural sector, have caused us to witness a drop in the water level in them. On this basis, the prevention of illegal harvests and the provision of environmental protection along with adequate rainfall in the watersheds have led to the injection of new life into some of the country’s wetlands.

Satellite calculations are done to calculate the percentage of selected wetlands in the country based on thresholding from the OTSU method in the separation of lake water bodies and using the NDWI index, and the images are calculated with the criterion of cloudiness less than 5%.
