Armenia: Baku hides real number of prisoners


According to Fars News Agency’s International Group, the Armenian Foreign Minister said that the authorities of the Republic of Azerbaijan are hiding the real number of Armenian prisoners and their place of detention.

According to the news agency “Pan of ArmeniansArmenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan made the remarks during a meeting with International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Vice President Jill Carbonier on Friday.

Mirzoyan stressed that the immediate return of prisoners of war and civilian hostages remains a priority. He added that Baku continues to violate the Geneva Convention requirements of the November 9, 2020 declaration and obstructs the return of prisoners.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia said that the behavior of the officials of the Republic of Azerbaijan creates serious grounds for the presumption of the disappearance of prisoners.

The President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, recently claimed that Baku had returned all Armenian prisoners and detainees to Yerevan.

Aliyev said that Baku had handed over to Armenia all the Armenian prisoners of war captured during the recent Nagorno-Karabakh war, and that they had returned our captives to us.

According to the ceasefire agreement signed between Moscow, Baku and Yerevan on November 11, 2016, the exchange of prisoners was one of its clauses, which has been implemented in stages over the past months.

In the fall of 2020, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh intensified with armed conflict in the disputed area. On November 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikolay Pashinyan signed a joint statement on a complete ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the ceasefire agreement between Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan, Armenia was to evacuate the occupied territories of the Republic of Azerbaijan in Aghdam, Kalbajar and Lachin, and it was also agreed to facilitate communication between Nakhchivan and other parts of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
