Esteki: It is difficult to break the taboo; We have shortcomings

Alireza Esteki On the eve of sending the Iranian national boxing team to the 2021 World Championships in Serbia, he told IRNA: “I have been leading the national team for about two and a half years and now I know that the team is not 100% ready to participate in the World Championships. It is a fact.

He added: “After the Asian Championship, our focus was on two Olympic boxers (Daniel Shahbakhsh and Shahin Mousavi), and after the Olympics, the training was closed for about four weeks due to some problems.”

The head coach of the Iranian national team stated: “We held two weeks of selection and then we had three weeks of training and we will go to the world championships with a relatively new lineup.”

Esteki continued: “Compared to the 2019 World Cup, only Moslem Maghsoudi and Shahin Mousavi remain in the squad and we are going to Belgrade with a low average age.” These competitions can be a good preparation for us to achieve our goal of success in the Asian Games.

“We did not have a joint camp with foreign teams,” he said, noting that his team has various shortcomings. To this I must add the lack of a physiotherapist, a nutritionist, a massager and many other things that really bothered us.

“Boxing should not be considered a discipline in which everyone disagrees. This is not really the case, and boxers work hard to succeed,” Stecki explained.

The head coach of the Iranian national team added: “I do not know why some teams can have 30 players to participate in the World Championships, but the Overseas Council opposes sending boxing teammates to go to important fights without a doctor, massager and physiotherapist, which are basic needs.”

He added: “With all these interpretations, I have high hopes that all 10 of our boxers will present good fights and achieve better results than the 2019 world fights.” The draw is not important for us and we have to play the best game.

Regarding the lack of Iranian boxers in Seyedbandi, Esteki said: “Unfortunately, this issue causes a lot of damage to teams like Iran.” Perhaps this is one of the reasons why our country’s boxing has not been able to win a world medal so far.

The head coach of the Iranian national team added: “Breaking the taboo has a certain stress, but we are not disappointed for winning a medal.” We want to fight well and prepare well for the Asian Games.
