EU foreign policy chief Peter Stanoo expressed concern over recent developments in Lebanon and called on Lebanese officials to work to resolve the issue.

According to Sputnik, Peter Stano, spokesman for the EU Foreign Policy Office, said: “We are on the streets of Beirut during today’s events. It is a matter of concern. The Lebanese people do not need confrontation. They do not want to die.” “And we regret that people were injured. We call on everyone to exercise restraint and remain calm.”

“The Lebanese government and politicians must be held accountable. They must ensure a transparent investigation into the Beirut bombing. People want legal answers to their questions.”
Stano stated that Europe has a sanctions mechanism against the destabilization of the situation in Lebanon and is closely monitoring the developments in this country. “If necessary, we are ready to resume the review of sanctions. Everything is possible, if the member states agree and coordinate,” Stano said.
He also said that the EU foreign ministers’ meeting in Luxembourg on October 18th could address the issue if the situation in Lebanon worsens.
This morning, supporters of Shiite parties gathered in al-Tayouna to take part in a large demonstration demanding the removal of the chief judge in the Beirut port bombing case. Unidentified gunmen opened fire on protesters, according to news sources. According to the Lebanese Interior Ministry, the death toll from the shootings has risen to five, although many have been injured.
