Lazy eye, silent disease of children

According to a Fars reporter, Farideh Zanozi in “Salam Tehran” referring to the definition of lazy eye, said: “The scientific definition of lazy eye is a decrease in one or two-sided vision that remains after the causes are eliminated.”

Referring to the causes of lazy eye, he said: Its roots go back to several etiologies of its cause. Sometimes congenital causes cause this, such as congenital cataracts or drooping congenital eyelids, and sometimes related to refractive errors that the child later develops. It may also be related to physiological causes that the child will later struggle with.

In response to what are the symptoms of lazy eye, Zenozi said: “The worst part of lazy eye is that sometimes it has no symptoms, meaning that the child does not show any symptoms that the parent notices.” For example, sometimes a child has a fever and the parent realizes that the child is sick but has no history of lazy eye that wants to report to the parent that I am seeing better or worse or to say that I feel blurred; He can not say these things because he has no real mental background. When he opens his eyes to the world, the effects of vision begin to take shape, and he thinks that what he sees is what must be seen. So the child can not report to us. Of course, sometimes symptoms such as drooping eyelids or deviated eyes can be a good guide for a parent to seek treatment, but often there are no symptoms.

Regarding the relationship between deviation and lazy eye, he said: One of the symptoms of lazy eye can be deviation; Deviation of the eye itself usually causes the child to have lazy eye. The first thing to do is to treat the aberration, and when the aberration is treated, the laziness of the eye will be treated automatically.

The head of the eye laziness prevention plan, referring to the time of onset of lazy eye and its treatment, said: If lazy eye wants to occur, the symptoms of vision disorders can usually be seen until the age of 6 years. For this reason, it is said that the golden age for diagnosing lazy eye is 3 to 6 years old. They left 3 years old because we could work with the child so that he could tell us the symptoms, and they left 6 years old because the roof is the best treatment. If diagnosed between the ages of 3 and 6, we can achieve 100% cure, but the older we get, the 100% chance of recovery decreases, and after the age of 10 we can almost say that not much can be done for children.

Referring to the side effects of lazy eye, he said: “One of the most worrying side effects of lazy eye is that it can cause severe low vision or blindness in the future, which is why one of the missions of the welfare organization is to act sooner and cover children between 3 Raise 6 years so that if there is a case, it can be diagnosed and treated faster.

Regarding the ways to diagnose lazy eye, Zenozi said: “The best process is to go through the screening process, because even in developed countries, the procedures start from the screening stages to the specialized stages.” It is best to take children to screening centers every year from the age of 3 for vision screening; There are trained people who can provide this service to the people and different tools are used depending on the age of the child. 3-year-olds are examined with the device because they usually do not get the symptoms well and may have problems with orientations, but then at the ages of 4, 5 and 6 we screen the children with an E chart. If a specialized examination is needed, a referral can be made and specialized examinations performed.

Referring to the ways of examining children’s eyes, he said: “Lazy eye examination has a special solution.” The age of 3 years is the time to start these stages. Of course, the child should be examined by an ophthalmologist at birth. If the child is 3 years old or has a communication problem, then he / she will be examined with screening devices, otherwise he / she will be examined with the same chart E. If the child is healthy, they can wait until next year for re-screening, but if they need a specialist examination, the screens will refer them to a specialist unit, which provides services completely free of charge, and if necessary, specialists for treatment for the child. They begin.

“Treatment varies depending on the case,” Zenozi said of how to treat lazy eye and its costs. The treatment process should be followed exactly as recommended by the doctor. Treatment may start as simple as closing the eyes to wear glasses and sometimes requires surgery, which is very rare; But the expenses should not worry the families because if they have a problem with the expenses, the welfare organization has considered that they can use the free services of the organization.

The head of the Tehran Province Lazy Eye Prevention Project, in response to the possibility of treating lazy eye with LASIK, said: About LASIK, considering that the topic is completely specialized, specialized people should be responsible, but it is not used often.

It is worth mentioning that the “Hello Tehran” program is the morning program of the social group of Panj Sima channel, which is performed from Saturday to Thursday from 6:30 to 9:00 AM with different sections such as political, social, economic, cultural and sports, performed by Mostafa Emami, Fariba Bagheri and Sedigheh Moradi.
