Taliban Commitment to Reopen Girls’ Schools in Afghanistan

Two months after the Taliban closed girls ‘schools, a UN official said the group had pledged to reopen girls’ schools soon.

“Schools for girls in Balkh, Jawzjan, Samangan, Kunduz and Uruzgan have already been opened,” UNICEF Deputy Omar Abdi told reporters.

Abdi, who visited Kabul last week, stressed that the acting head of the Taliban’s interim education ministry had assured him that the group was working on a new procedure for reopening girls’ schools and that the schools would reopen in the next month or two. .

He added: “Millions of female students were deprived of education after the Taliban came to power.”

Earlier, the Taliban announced that they were working on instructions to reopen girls’ schools in Afghanistan.

In this regard, Bilal Karimi, the Taliban’s deputy spokesman, expressed hope that instructions for reopening girls’ schools would be drafted soon.

“We try to make the instructions so that girls can continue their education in a safe environment,” she said.

Karimi did not comment on the timing or details of the guidelines.

Most schools in the Afghan capital have been closed since the Taliban took office last month. Boys’ secondary schools have reopened in recent weeks, but girls have been barred from attending school.

The Taliban’s move has provoked widespread reactions.

In this regard, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai had said that Afghan girls should return to school as soon as possible and stressed that this is an issue that he strongly supports.

Karzai stressed that Afghanistan would not be a prosperous country without educated women.
