The proposed UK law could disrupt the security of users around the world

Apple says the change to UK regulatory laws could give the UK government unprecedented power to covertly even block the release of security and privacy updates in other countries. The company warned that if the new rules are passed, not just UK users will be affected, but users worldwide.

The UK government is considering updating the Inspection Powers Act (IPA) to allow the Home Office to access encrypted services in some way. On the other hand, according to these rules, the British Home Office can prevent the release of some updates, and this will also prevent the release of updates in other countries.

Apple’s statement against the proposed new UK law

Apple in Statement “We are now deeply concerned about the proposed amendments to the Inspection Powers Act (IPA) before Parliament puts users’ privacy and security at risk,” it said. “This change would be unprecedented government intrusion and, if implemented, the UK would be able to covertly veto new user protection measures globally and prevent them from being offered to our customers.”

According to these new amendments, any company that is the recipient of a request from the government must notify the British authorities of any changes in the software that may limit the government’s access to this data. The government officials of this country say that with this law, they can predict possible risks against public security, including dealing with terrorism and child abuse.

“We have always made it clear that we support technological innovation and private and secure communication technologies, including end-to-end encryption, but public safety should not be sacrificed,” a government spokesperson said in response to the report.

Recently, a number of groups supporting civil liberties had also protested against this change in the laws. They believe that with this change, private companies will become the regulatory arms of the government.

The change to the IPA law is going to be brought up in the British House of Lords soon.
