The United States is establishing a special operations base in Albania

According to Reuters, the US Special Operations Command based in Stuttgart, Germany, said that with the establishment of the base in Albania, coordination with Albanian allies, greater access to transport hubs in the Balkans and logistical flexibility will increase.

“This is great news and shows great credibility and close cooperation,” Albanian Prime Minister Rama said in a video message.

Albania joined the NATO military alliance in 2009.

Special forces trained and equipped with advanced communication equipment and weapons are often used in counter-terrorism operations or reconnaissance. They can penetrate enemy lines to contain more opposition forces.

According to Reuters, it is unclear what the role of these American forces will be in Albania.

Two decades after 9/11, the number of US Special Forces has more than doubled, their budget has tripled and their deployment has quadrupled.

More than two decades after the end of the Kosovo war in 1999, the United States now has 600 troops in the former Serbian province of Kosovo to maintain a fragile peace.
