The US Treasury Department has authorized some financial transactions with the Taliban

According to Fars News Agency’s International Group, the US Treasury Department on Friday authorized the US government, non-profit organizations and international organizations, especially the United Nations, to engage with the Taliban and the Haqqani network in transactions necessary for humanitarian activities.

The US Treasury Department also issued another permit authorizing certain transactions related to the export and re-export of food, medicine and medical equipment to Afghanistan.

“The Treasury Department is committed to facilitating the flow of humanitarian assistance to the people of Afghanistan and other activities in support of basic human needs,” said Andrea Gaki, director of the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).

“The United States will continue to work with financial institutions and international organizations to facilitate the importation of agricultural products, medicine and other items into Afghanistan, while maintaining sanctions against the Taliban and the Haqqani network,” the Treasury official added.

The United States froze the central bank of Afghanistan’s $ 9.4 billion in reserves a few weeks ago. The country has said the Taliban should not have access to the reserves.

The Taliban captured Kabul on 24 August. So far no country has recognized them and the international community has said it is in no hurry to recognize the Taliban.

The United Nations warned a few days ago that the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan was dire.

The United Nations has also called for immediate and continued support for displaced Afghans inside and outside Afghanistan. According to the international organization, more than 3.5 million people have been displaced from their homes as a result of the conflict inside Afghanistan. This year alone, 630,000 people have been displaced from their homes.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) says more than 18 million people in Afghanistan are currently in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

The organization had previously said that one in three Afghans did not know where his next meal would come from.

According to the organization, about half of children under the age of five will suffer from severe malnutrition in the next 12 months.
