Ukraine: We call on the West to send more weapons to confront Russia

According to the International Group of Fars News Agency, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister on Tuesday evening called on the Western countries to send more weapons to this country to confront Russia.

He also called on the European Union to commit to Ukraine joining the bloc in the future.

Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday evening that Russia was accustomed to European sanctions.

“The Europeans, the United States and Britain will never stop implementing their so-called Russian sanctions,” he said.

“Ukraine destroyed the Minsk agreement immediately after it was signed,” he added.

The European Union (EU) has called for sanctions against 351 Russian lawmakers who voted in favor of the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk.

The presidents of the European Commission and the Council of Europe also said that “illegal and unacceptable” Russia’s move to recognize the two republics of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine, that Brussels would present the first package of sanctions against Russia this afternoon.

They added that the sanctions target those involved in the decision, as well as banks that finance the Russian military and other operations in the region. According to the statement, the sanctions will also target the ability of the Russian state and government to access the European Union’s capital, financial markets and services. In addition, the European Union intends to crack down on imports and exports of the two breakaway regions with similar measures taken after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.

At least two banks operating in Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine could also be targeted if the proposals are backed by the 27-nation bloc. The Presidents of the European Commission and the Council of Europe said in a statement that the European Union was ready to take further action in the light of further developments.
