“Studies have shown that using computer games on smartphones for more than an hour a day is an important risk factor for dry eye,” he said.

The ophthalmologist noted: ن Therefore, it is important for parents and teachers to be aware of these risks and to be more careful about the length of time children and adolescents use these devices, the distance from the screen and the type of daily activities.

Hadi added: “The most important suggestion to prevent ocular complications caused by electronic devices is to reduce the hours of using this device.” The least that can be done is to reduce the hours of extracurricular use of smartphones and computers and increase physical and outdoor activities.

He reminded: in the intervals of using electronic tools, it is better to rest the eyes and reduce the fatigue of the eyes by voluntary blinking and looking at the distances away. It is also recommended that you blink intentionally while looking at the screen regularly to prevent the tear film from drying out.

“It is recommended to use artificial tears without preservatives that can be obtained without a doctor’s prescription,” said the ophthalmologist. An examination by an ophthalmologist should be considered if the symptoms do not resolve despite following these tips, or if redness and inflammation of the eyes occur.
