“Grappling is one of the disciplines covered by the World Wrestling Union and is also known as combat wrestling,” he said. This discipline was close to the ancient Greek wrestling in which they competed in the ancient Olympics. Currently, we are under the auspices of the Federation of Martial Arts Associations in Iran. This is the sixth edition of the national competition and for the first time in it, a gold belt will be awarded. Due to corona restrictions, fights are only performed in the adult male section.
Regarding the participation of athletes in these competitions, he said: “Athletes will be invited for the activities of the provinces, and more than one hundred people will take part in this event.” Competitions are held in 2 styles and each style in eight weights. At the end of the competition, we will not have a provincial position and the winners will be awarded medals and the champions will receive belts.
The head of Iran’s grappling, stating that the competitions will be held on February 20 in Tehran’s 7th of Tir Martyrs Hall, added: “During the competitions, we will appreciate the family of the martyr Hassan Abdullahzadeh, who was one of my students.”
Khan Honarmand also reminded: we should activate the competitions at the level of the Armed Forces, because this field has an active presence in the great armies of the world. We are even consulting with the presidents of other Asian countries and we intend to host the first tournament of Islamic countries.
He asked why this field is not a subset of the Iranian Wrestling Federation? “The WUA is not the only freestyle and freestyle wrestling, and other traditional disciplines and wrestling can be independent,” he said. At the time of Rasool Khadem, we were in the Wrestling Federation, but now we are operating under the auspices of the Martial Arts Federation.
Regarding the judging of the competitions, he explained: The World Union updates the grappling rules booklet every 2 years. The translation of these rules has been provided to the judges and this year the competitions will be held with the same rules.
Khan Honarmand stated: So far, we have held three coaching courses as well as refereeing, and we also plan to invite global teachers. We have about 13 active provinces, but Corona closed many clubs.
He also explained about the conditions of the national team: “So far, we have had three international dispatches to Turkey, Belarus and the Republic of Azerbaijan, and we have also been on the podium in world competitions.” We will definitely have a national team, but the technical council will decide on the conditions of the national team.
The head of the grappling committee said about the activity of women in this field: the women’s team has been sent to international competitions and they are interested in this sport.
