In an interview with the sports reporter of Tasnim news agency, Mohsen Ashuri said about the performance of the Iranian national team in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar: Without a doubt, we did not perform well, and the way the head coach was selected and changed before the start of the tournament was very strange and unprecedented. The performance of the national team in this cup was very poor. Although we did not play modern football at least in the previous periods, we at least had a successful performance in terms of defense. Unfortunately, this did not happen in this period and we showed very shaky defense.
Regarding the discussion of Carlos Queiroz’s stay or departure from the national team, he noted: Usually, there is a technical group in all federations that checks the conditions, but I don’t know if there is such a group in our federation. There are certainly good options for leading the national team among domestic coaches, and on the other hand, the federation can also go for a foreign coach.
Iran’s football veteran also stated: If we are going to bring a foreign coach, that coach’s style should suit our football. Croatian coaches are usually the answer in Iranian football, because their style is very similar to our football conditions, and on the other hand, they are not expensive coaches. In general, I do not agree with Queiroz staying in the national team.
Referring to the changes that have been made in the composition of the national team, especially in the defensive line, Ashuri said: “In the preliminary round, we used Kananizadegan and Khalilzadeh in the defensive line, who had a positive performance, but I don’t know why these changes were made in the World Cup.” All in all, the events that happened to Iran in this cup were not good at all, and without a doubt, if this process continues, our work in the Asian Nations Cup will be very difficult and we will not have a chance to succeed in those competitions.
