Western countries have now turned to the wealthy country, which has long had ties to the Islamist group, to contain the consequences of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan.

The Financial Times wrote that Qatar has been in contact with Islamists in the region for decades, seeking to plan and mediate. Qatar’s facilitating role in US-Taliban negotiations has enabled it to play a greater role in the region’s geopolitics.

The US military base in Qatar has become the last resort for the US, and the Persian Gulf country has been home to tens of thousands of Afghan refugees.

The embassies of the Western powers in Afghanistan have been moved from Kabul to Doha, one of the reasons being to facilitate contact with the Taliban. Qatar, which mediated between the Afghan parties before the US withdrawal, is leading multilateral talks with the Taliban on the future activities of Kabul Airport after the US withdrawal.

Qatari ties to the Taliban, the Muslim Brotherhood and Tehran have often angered some of its neighbors. In 2017, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched trade and travel sanctions against the country, reinforced by President Donald Trump’s initial suspicions about Doha, one of Washington’s most important strategic partners.

Doha was able to defeat the sanctions due to its high financial capacity and the reconstruction of trade routes through countries such as Turkey and Iran, which are Saudi Arabia’s main rivals.
