7-year decline in audience despite increasing sales

Charso Press: The year 1401, which was associated with special days for Iranian cinema, is the right time to review some statistics in the past decade, and one of the most significant of them is the audience and cinema sales. The epidemic of the new corona virus, the growth of the activity of home platforms as well as some hindering social events can be considered among the factors affecting the number of cinema audiences in the last months and 3 years.

Amirhossein Alam Elhadi – a cultural and cinema expert – who emphasized on changing the methods to improve the conditions and prevent the stagnation of the box office of cinemas in the past months, has analyzed the state of cinema in the years 1391 to 1401 in a statistical survey.

Emphasizing that the statistical table of this situation is sufficiently expressive, he states that the audience size in 1401 is a return to 1394.

He adds: Cinema sales increased by 110 billion tomans in 1991 due to the 200% increase in ticket prices compared to 2018 (before Corona), although the increase in ticket prices during these years is seen as a serious complication of the cultural economy, which, of course, is in addition to the complications of Every year we see an increase in the number of movie theaters in the macro economy of the society.

Stating that “we are still witnessing the effects of Corona on the reduction of seats in cinemas from 2018 to 1401”, Alam Elhadi said: “In 1402, I am afraid that we will reach the audience statistics of 1392, if we insist on the same rules of governance in cinema.”

This cinema expert has compiled the information in the above table based on the annual report of the Vice-Chancellor of Technology Development and Cinematic Studies of the Cinema Organization of the country as well as the Cinema Management and Sales System (SMF) until March 20, 1401.
