A “full-screen” iPhone with an under-display camera is likely to arrive in 2027

Apple’s Korean suppliers of technology development Camera under the display Smartphones have started (UDC) to see the world’s first “full screen” iPhone in the future. It is possible that this technology will make its way to the iPhone 19 Pro.

According to the report of the Korean publication The ElecLG Innotek, which is active in the field of producing the main parts of mobile phones, has started the initial development of its UDC, which is placed under the display, and despite that, we will no longer see the selfie camera in the special opening above the display.

Of course, the UDC is different from a regular selfie camera module, as it delivers less light to the image sensor. For this reason, in this technology, the light passes through the screen before reaching the camera lens, and this will lead to a decrease in the quality and brightness of the images.

To solve this problem, LG is developing a multi-lens “arc” system that reduces light aberrations and increases light intensity around the sensor module to improve overall image quality. LG Innotech has published patents for this technology since December last year and is now developing it, with more patents expected to be filed in the future.

Improving the camera under the iPhone display

According to this report, LG Display, which is a subsidiary of LG Innotech Group, has also started the development of UDC. LG Display plans to increase the light transmittance of its UDC technology to 20% by 2023 and then to 40% by 2024 to meet Apple’s expected standard. Also, Apple apparently received a UDC sample from an unknown vendor, but its performance was not satisfactory.

Before Apple uses the camera under the display in iPhone phones, it is expected that we will see Face ID technology under the display panel in the iPhone 17 Pro and 18 Pro. But in the future, the iPhone 19 Pro models of 2027 will use the camera technology under the display.
