A look at “The file is open”; Heprot and strategy

There are three reasons for the selection of the film “The Case is Open” by the new work of Kyomarth Pourahmad, whose quality of recent works is not very acceptable by critics and audiences in comparison to his earlier works, to participate in the 40th Fajr Film Festival. 1. Desirable quality and above the standard line of the festival 2. Making the festival more credible with the work of a well-known filmmaker, especially in a year when the field is more occupied by newcomers or lesser known ones 3. The selection committee’s view on genre diversity and insisting on the presence of a film from the youth cinema.

If the reason was the first two options, which is not related to our review discussion, but if the reason for choosing option 3 was, we will look at the movie from this point of view. Anyway, when a film is made in the field of children and teenagers, it is natural to measure it first of all with the criteria of specific protocols related to this age group and this kind of films. In fact, first of all, the question is whether “Open Case” is a film with strict standards in the field of youth cinema? In the credits of the film, there is no sign of using a psychologist or even a sociologist with the expertise of teenagers. This has been completely neglected in Iranian cinema. However, the existing and discussed work, in the context of branches related to this field, seems to have observed the necessary and required points according to the experience of its author and director. But in some aspects it also has challenges or at least basic questions; For example, facing the category and problem of “suicide” or discussing relationships with the opposite sex.

Now the question is raised whether these inattentions were due to ignorance and far from a specific strategy, or whether the filmmaker believed that it is not possible to communicate with the teenagers of the new century with the language of the 60s movies, and if those spaces are repeated, this relationship tape is distorted. . In any case, ignoring the issues of today’s teenagers, whose lives are fundamentally different from previous generations, can lead to the Heprotization of the film related to their age group.

But apart from these, the script also has flaws in terms of cinematic issues and standards. The treatment of some characters in the film is such that the principle of believability of their behavior is disturbed by the audience. For example, the behavior of the story’s mother played by “Literary Breeze” as a grieving mother does not seem logical at all and is not accepted. In fact, it suffers from a kind of exaggeration. Similarly, the character of the family’s future son-in-law, who is a lawyer, a policeman or a judicial officer, played by “Pejman Bazghi” and the daughter of the family, played by “Shadi Mokhtari”, who also happens to be a reporter. Even though Mokhtari himself worked for a short time in a news agency with the name and coordinates of “Isna”, but the atmosphere of the news agency and its reporter in the film in question is set in such a way that due to the lack of attention to the indicators, at least the audience can reach this conclusion. So maybe the other characters in the story have not been paid accurately.

On the other hand, the script has inconsistencies, which can be said that the editor did not do his work accurately and correctly; Otherwise, why should a movie that has unnecessary plans and sequences that cause objections to the audience last about 110 minutes instead of 90 minutes? The cinematography of the work also has its flaws, which clearly shows its weaknesses in the short sequence related to hearing the news of the victim’s family’s consent in prison. The music of the film can also be a subject of discussion, whether it has a stereotypical behavior with a film for teenagers and whether it has paid attention to the same principle of generational difference?

With all these descriptions, in addition to the fact that “the case is open” is definitely not considered a prominent point in the filmmaking case of Kyomarth Pourahmad, in any case, it can be considered as a film that shows the level of experience and expertise of its producer. This film is included in the series of festival films, which a few years ago did not show good results at all in the same area and was sacrificed to the more favorable work of the late “Yadullah Samadi”.

With these characteristics, “The File is Open” can be considered a useful film for its audience in the screening; However, on the condition that he can get full approval from the aspect of psychological effects concerns.
