In recent decades, attention to tourism in Mashhad has led to the evolution and development of tourist spaces and attractions. Therefore, today, many investments have been made with the aim of exploiting and developing urban tourism in Mashhad. Some researchers believe that tourism is a catalyst for urban regeneration and is very effective in improving the economic conditions of cities. Mashhad is also one of the cities whose economy is based on tourism and the development of this industry depends on informing and strengthening the tourist attractions of Mashhad.

Museums are one of the tourist attractions that attract many tourists every year. The Great Museum of Khorasan is also an example of the most visited museums in the city of Mashhad. Among the important and great events of this museum, we can mention the unveiling of the relief of the Achaemenid soldier.

The role of museums in human societies is an innovative, lasting role and promoter of the purest cultural phenomena. Museums are one of the few centers for preserving the relics of the previous generation and are in fact the children of art and history. Each of these objects speaks thousands of languages ​​while being speechless; Because they provide authentic documents of culture, art and history.

The Great Museum of Khorasan is one of the museums of Mashhad that has been built in Kuhsangi Park. Planning to build this museum dates back to before the revolution. In 1977, the initial proposal of this museum was made, but due to the conditions of the revolution and the holy defense, this was not done and the establishment of this museum was not realized. This idea was raised again in 1371, and after holding a competition with a public call, it was selected from among the various designs of the living project of Dr. Mohammad Amin Mirfanderski.

This project is inspired by the construction of the Sun Mansion in Kalat Naderi. Thus, after an agreement with Mashhad Municipality, 4900 square meters of land in Kuhsangi Park was given to the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage, Tourism and Handicrafts, and in the second half of 2003, the construction of this museum was halted and the construction process of this museum began.

In 2005, Mashhad Sazeh Company officially started the construction of this museum. After the completion of the hardening of the museum building and 90% of the facilities, the rest of the work was assigned to Dasht Behsaz Company according to the interior design of Gam Ma Consulting Engineers Company. This museum was built using the new technologies of museum management and at the highest standard level with 18,000 square meters of infrastructure and 53 meters of height on 12 floors and was inaugurated on February 6, 2015.

The Regional Museum of Greater Khorasan includes various sections such as a historical property repository, a meeting hall, a library, a workshop and a restoration workshop, and various exhibition halls. The storage section of historical movable and architectural decorations is equipped with the most advanced fire, earthquake, and war damage facilities.

The laboratory and conservation laboratory of historical objects and historical decorations (Dr. Baqer Ayatollahzadeh Shirazi), in addition to the facilities and equipment of the conservation and laboratory workshop and laboratory, has a research, documentation and study department of historical objects and architectural decorations. The community hall (Dr. Mohammad Amin Mirfenderski) is also equipped with audio-visual systems and has a capacity of about 140 people. Specialized library (Engineer Sirajuddin Kazeruni), with a capacity of more than 5,000 volumes of books, documents and specialized photographs and a suitable place for researchers and enthusiasts to study has been designed and built.

In order to honor the great role of the builders and designers of this museum, parts of this place have been named after Dr. Mirfanderski, Engineer Kazeruni and Dr. Baqer Ayatollahzadeh Shirazi.

Undoubtedly, the Great Museum of Khorasan is one of the largest capacities created in the field of tourism in Mashhad and even in the country, which is located in a suitable space and free of urban traffic problems, and pilgrims and tourists can easily visit the holy shrine of Imam Reza. In this museum, many historical monuments have been exposed to the public, including the stone sculpture of the third millennium BC – Neishabour, the bronze incense burner of the Seljuk period, the embossed brick of the Parthian period – Dargaz, the prominent brick of the Ilkhanid period – the city of Toos, Tire Seljuk-Neishabour constellation, Seljuk-pottery pottery city – Toos city, Safavid period entrance bowl, golden pottery ‌ Seljuk-Neishabour period, Afshari period steel shield, Bronze Age jewelers – Neishabour, I was the tombstone of the 7th century AH Parthian – Dargaz named the Quranic shrine (Fatiha al-Kitab) of the Qajar period and Kashi of the Qajar period.

Every year, Holy Mashhad and Khorasan Razavi have the honor of hosting millions of Iranian pilgrims and tourists, which has created a great opportunity in various fields of cultural heritage, tourism and handicrafts.
