Afghan women protest the removal of the Ministry of Women; Taliban: This ministry was a symbolic office

According to the Fars News Agency’s Afghanistan website, a number of Afghan women held a protest rally in front of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs on Sunday, September 17, to protest the removal of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs.

These women chanted the slogans “Freedom and Equality”, “Elimination of women, elimination of human beings”, “Freedom of expression, the result of our power” and “Education, work, freedom, moving towards prosperity”.

On Friday last week, the Taliban lowered the sign of the Ministry of Women’s Affairs in downtown Kabul, and instead raised the sign of the newly formed Ministry of Invitation, Guidance, Enjoining the Good and Forbidding the Evil. The move has also provoked reactions.

The Taliban, however, did not provide a specific reason for removing the Ministry of Women’s Affairs; But they say they plan to work on an alternative plan.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said about the reason for removing the Ministry of Women: “This ministry was a symbolic agency in the previous system and had no effect on women’s access to basic rights.”

According to him, this office will be regulated within the framework of Sharia law in the future, and it is not necessary that its name be ministry, deputy or directorate. (More details)
