Al-Maliki’s reaction to Turkish aggression in northern Iraq

According to Fars News Agency’s International Group, Nouri al-Maliki, the leader of the “State of Law” coalition and former Iraqi Prime Minister, reacted this afternoon (Thursday) in a statement to Turkey’s repeated attacks on Iraqi territory.

“Attack on Iraqi sovereignty by any country is rejected,” Nouri al-Maliki was quoted as saying by Nas News. “The government must take the necessary measures to stop these aggressions.”

“Repeated invasion of Iraq in the Kurdistan Region by Turkey and the martyrdom and wounding of individuals will seriously damage Iraqi-Turkish relations,” the statement said.

Al-Maliki concluded by praying for the martyrs and wishing a speedy recovery for the wounded and injured, adding: “These repeated aggressions call on Iraq to reconsider its position and stop such aggressions.”

The statement came as Qais al-Khazali, secretary general of the Asaeb Ahl al-Haq movement in Iraq, said in a statement last night that they would not remain silent in the face of Turkish attacks on the Iraqi Kurdistan region.

Kurdish media reported yesterday afternoon that a drone had attacked several buildings in the “Sunni” section of Sinjar. The Kurdistan 24 news website quoted eyewitnesses as saying that six people had been killed in the attack; However, some media outlets reported four deaths.

According to Iraqi media, Turkey targeted civilian areas in the attack, which seriously injured a number of civilians.

Al-Ahd news website also reported that a child died as a result of the attack. However, the Anti-Terrorism Organization of the Iraqi Kurdistan Region claimed in a statement that Turkey had targeted the positions of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party.
