AMD quietly reduced the graphics frequency of Ryzen 7040HS processors

As reported, AMD company specifications for Ryzen 7040HS Phoenix laptop processors It has been updated on its official website And in addition to reducing the frequency of the internal RDNA 3 graphics, it also removed support for the PCIe 5.0 interface from these processors.

Reducing the graphics frequency of Ryzen 7040HS processors

Ryzen 7040HS series laptop processors with Phoenix code were the most attractive laptop processors of the Ryzen 7000 family. These processors are not only based on the new Zen 4 architecture, but also use RNDA 3 internal graphics, which is AMD’s latest graphics architecture. Importantly, unlike Raphael desktop APUs and Dragon Range laptop APUs, which have a maximum of 2 CUs, Phoenix APUs have up to 12 CU graphics units with RDNA 3 architecture.

During the CES 2023 event, AMD announced that it will release three processors under the Ryzen 7040HS series: Ryzen 5 7640HS, Ryzen 7 7840HS and Ryzen 9 7904HS. These processors are 35 to 54 watts and in addition to 8 main processing cores, they have either 8 or 12 RDNA 3 graphics processing units. Shortly after the announcement event, AMD created the official specification page of these three processors on its official website, and from there we found out that the maximum frequency of the RDNA 3 cores in these processors reaches 3.0 GHz.

But we have recently noticed that AMD has quietly and quietly reduced the frequency of the internal RDNA 3 graphics of these three processors by 200 MHz:

  • Ryzen 9 7940HS: 3.0 GHz → 2.8 GHz
  • Ryzen 7 7840HS: 2.9 GHz → 2.7 GHz
  • Ryzen 5 7640HS: 2.8 GHz → 2.6 GHz

A brief comparison between old and new information from AMD’s site also confirms this:

There is no news about the PCIe 5.0 interface either

This is not the first time that AMD has changed the specifications of the Ryzen 7040HS Phoenix processors. In fact, these processors were supposed to support the PCIe 5.0 interface several months before the release; But this is no longer the case and the new specification table confirms this.

With this trend, the sooner AMD releases Ryzen 7000HS processors, the better. As we get closer to the release date of these processors, more and more modifications are made by AMD, and none of them are “improvements”. The official release date for these processors is in March, and hopefully, there will be some of these processors left by then!
