Armenia has a population of 30 million, and one of the most important issues facing the country’s industry and economy is the lack of energy resources that has made it dependent, and this is one of the factors that increase the strategic position of nuclear energy in this country. For example, according to the US Energy Information Administration, Armenia imports natural gas from Iran and allocates a large portion of it to generating electricity at the Harazdan power plant.
Turkey has repeatedly protested the continued operation of Armenia’s nuclear power plants, including the Metsamur plant, and called for its closure. In early 2011, the head of the Turkish Atomic Energy Organization announced a leak of nuclear material at the Armenian nuclear power plant.
Turkey and the Republic of Azerbaijan have not yet reacted to US nuclear cooperation with Armenia.
Meanwhile, the Turkish president recently said that the first unit of the Turkish nuclear power plant will be completed by May 2023.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, at a ceremony in the southern Turkish province of Mersin, stressed the importance of nuclear energy for the country’s future, saying a total of 13,000 Turkish and Russian engineers are working to complete the plant, and that the facility will be equipped with the latest And the safest technology is under construction.
“The Aqqoyu facility will help the environment and our technological advances by generating electricity and reducing carbon emissions,” Erdogan said.
