Berlin rejects precautionary sanctions against Russia

According to Fars News Agency’s International Service, after Germany’s objections to sending weapons to Ukraine, Berlin has now rejected Kiev’s request to impose more sanctions on Russia.

According to the RIA Novosti website, German government spokesman Stephen Hebeister announced today (Monday) that Berlin would refuse to impose precautionary sanctions on Russia to prevent an attack on Ukraine, and during a press conference in response to the question whether sanctions against Moscow will be proactive, saying sanctions will only be imposed if Russia violates Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

“The federal government,” he explained [آلمان] “He has a very clear position that if tough territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine is violated, tough and clear measures will be taken, such as sanctions.”

Ukrainian officials have in recent weeks called on the United States and EU members to impose tough sanctions on Moscow, following claims by Western governments that Russia would attack the country. European countries, meanwhile, are worried about Russia imposing sanctions, especially on energy and gas exports, if new sanctions are imposed on the country.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg has stressed that Europe is vulnerable to Russian gas, and has expressed concern about the continent’s energy situation following possible sanctions by Moscow. (More details) A senior European Commission official has previously said that as European countries prepare sanctions against Moscow, they should be prepared for possible Russian sanctions, especially in the field of energy.
