The latest action of the cyberspace regulator of this country also targets user accounts in popular Chinese social networks, including WeChat, Douyin and Weibo, which fall under the “self media” category. Among the 67,000 user accounts that have been closed forever in the social networks of this country, about 8,000 accounts have been deleted due to the spread of fake news, rumors and malicious information.
About 930,000 other accounts received lighter punishments, including removal of all followers or suspension and cancellation of monetization benefits.
In a separate program, China’s cyberspace regulator recently shut down more than 100,000 user accounts that misinterpreted media news to combat the spread of fake news through artificial intelligence technologies.
CAC announced that in its latest campaign, it has targeted about 13,000 fake military accounts with different names.
About 25,000 other accounts were targeted to impersonate public institutions such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and government research institutes.
About 187,000 user accounts have been targeted for impersonating news media and more than 430,000 accounts for providing advice or educational services without the required professional qualifications.
