Cinema review What is the difference between political and politicized cinema?

According to the reporter of Fars News Agency Radio and Television, the “Cinema Critic” program last night on March 12, with the topic of reviewing the films “Left, Right” and “Top Gun: Maverick”, a conversation with Mino Khani about the Resistance Film Festival and setting up a special discussion table. About the “difference between political and politicized cinema” aired on Chahar Sima channel.
At the beginning of the program, a panel discussion of the movie “Left, Right” directed by Hamed Mohammadi was held with the presence of Mohammad Sabri and Seyed Ali Seidan.
In “Left, Right” the audience is ahead of the filmmaker
First, Seyed Ali Sidan pointed out that “Left, Right” does not make the audience laugh, and said: the movie looks old and maybe one of the reasons is the two-three year delay of the release. If this movie had been made in the seventies, it would have been something like Bread, Love and Motor 1000. Maybe even if “Bread, Love and Motor 1000” is shown right now, it will be more alive than this movie.
He added: The work of the film is satire and it puts it on two characters; But there has to be a rigid and established image out there so that we can laugh at this joke. When that image doesn’t exist and the audience is ahead of the filmmaker, it makes the film and Hajosh not even able to make the audience laugh.
Sidan reminded: the film is highly apolitical and derealized. Depoliticization and politicization are two sides of the same coin. When de-politicization happens and all things appear to be non-political to say that they are just trying to show a life, in the end, extreme politicization happens and it faints to one side, so to speak.
The term “left and right” has faded in our political literature
Next, Mohammad Saberi, another critic of this section, emphasized on the typology of the film and stated: In order to define the left and right of the work, he has made a series of typical markings, which do not have an outside meaning. This makes the characters that the movie presents in the form of caricatures have no reality in the mind of the audience to laugh at the caricature. Basically, one of the biggest problems of the work starts from its title. The phrase “left and right” has faded in our political literature and no one uses it in the media.
He explained: I don’t know why Peyman Ghasemkhani, who was in the production team, was not written about the idea of the film? We have seen Manouchehr Mohammadi’s movie “Lizard” with Peyman Ghasemkhani from this combination. We have seen “gentlemen’s entry prohibited” from Rambad Javan’s composition next to Qasimkhani’s agreement.
This critic noted: The team is full of talent and the right people have gathered together; But because Hamed Mohammadi has written, the film is not successful. In my opinion, Hamed Mohammadi should learn from his trials and errors in the field of comedy scripts and move towards writing social scripts; In my opinion, it would have been much more successful.
The possibility of an increase in the price of cinema tickets
Hadi Firouzmandi, a media activist, announced the closing of the 13th edition of the 100 Film Festival and the beginning of the 17th edition of the Resistance Film at the news desk of the “Cinema Review” program.
He said about the increase in the price of cinema tickets: I have heard that the price of cinema tickets will definitely increase and the price of tickets in the new year will be between 60 and 70 thousand tomans. Cinematographers, broadcasters and related industries argue that the increase in the price of the dollar, the costs of film production, the maintenance of movie theaters and the decline of audiences in recent years justify the increase in ticket prices.
Screening of the film “Goli Room” at the Resistance Festival
In the continuation of the program, Mino Khani said in a telephone conversation with Amirreza Mafi about the beginning of the 17th resistance film festival: today, March 12, the opening ceremony of the resistance film festival was held with the presence of officials, officers and commanders of the IRGC, and “Goli Room” was shown as the opening film. became. Also, in the opening ceremony, short, long and adaptation screenplays recognized their winners.
He mentioned about the talent discovery and training section of the new generation of filmmakers of the Resistance Film Festival: One of the interesting events of this period of the Resistance Festival is the section called “Narrative Generation”. This section applies to those who were born in 1968 or later and are less than 33 years old.
Jahan Cinema Critic Desk was another part of “Cinema Criticism” where the movie “Top Gun: Maverick” was reviewed with the presence of Mohammad Reza Magdasian and Arash Khoshkho.
“Top Gun: Maverick” is a well-made and promotional work
Arash Khoshkho, a film critic, said about “Top Gun: Maverick”: This film contains all the classic formulas of the world because it is a promotional, youth-friendly and very high quality work. In fact, you can follow the formula I am talking about in the selection of actors, story lines, ups and downs of the script, etc.
He clarified: This film is a reaction film. If someone does something, the camera will constantly show you the reaction of others, who will look on with admiration or with anger. This is the formula that works in teen-friendly adventure cinema. It must be admitted that the film is a well-made and heavily advertised work to attract teenagers to the US Navy and Air Force.
We have no shortage of heroes
In the following, the critic Mohammad Reza Magdasian pointed to the use of technique in line with propaganda purposes and stated: I believe that the first power in today’s world is the media and one of the most powerful media is cinema. It doesn’t matter how many planes and ships I have and where I attack. It is important to use the media correctly. I just deliver cinema to the audience and the audience thinks that I am very powerful without realizing it. I can build any airplane I want and I can do any operation.
He continued: We are Iranians and we don’t want to forget from generation to generation that this country had a hero? We are also looking for prosperity in our cinemas. “Top Gun: Maverick” is a successful example. How many of these movies should they make and we check to arrive at a simple formula? How do they make an attractive and colorful film based on a formula abroad? Even in the most superficial movies, they present the characterization and data to the audience in a suitable way. These formulas are known. We don’t have many talented heroes and filmmakers in our country, but I feel that there is no serious determination for this.
At the end of his speech, this critic said: Whoever created such a work should be congratulated. Because first, it makes an attractive movie and the audience unconsciously falls in love with the content. It means that the content is not imposed on the audience and it is primarily cinema. The fourth and fifth category unconsciously conveys some concepts and no one understands what happened that made America so powerful!
In the next part of the program, a special discussion table was held with the presence of Akbar Nabavi on the topic of “politicized cinema and political cinema”.
We cannot speak politically in a political film
Amirreza Mafi, the host of “Cinema Criticism” said about the topic of the program: I think that not having a satirical and not politicized cinema prevents many possible political criticisms from appearing on the screen in the public domain. And when people don’t see their criticism on the cinema screen and in the media, it may appear from somewhere else.
He continued: If we allow criticism to happen in the cinema, we will see growth. As “Cinema is the key to progress” is our motto in this program. When we cannot speak politically in a political film, we speak politically in the form of caricatures in social and comedy films.
Mafi discussed the difference between the political and the politicized: the political is reasonable and arises from a demand, but the politicized is emotional and a reaction to a disillusioned demand.
Political cinema is a criticism of all kinds of power
Akbar Nabawi pointed out the root of the absence of political cinema in Iran and stated: Basically, political cinema is a criticism of all kinds of power; Political, economic, social, cultural, artistic power, etc. political cinema criticizes all types of these powers. Experience says that no power resists criticism and does not accept criticism. Because criticism is the power to enter the privacy of a structure.
In the end, he pointed out about the importance of political cinema in the country: the more political films and cinema are strengthened in this country, both types of political power will realize their limits and the public opinion and society will use the medium of cinema to move forward. Due to the economic, cultural and social situation becoming more complicated, programs like “Cinema Criticism” can help to build courage in filmmakers and officials to make political films.
“Cinema Criticism” program, produced by Youssef Bechari and hosted by Amirreza Mafi, airs on Fridays at 22:30 on Chahar Sima channel.
