Comparing the damage of the harsh European winter and Iranian winter / Europeans pay 10 times more

According to the economic reporter of Fars news agency, with the start of the war in Ukraine and Russia’s gas embargo against the European Union, foreign media discussed the dimensions of the European gas crisis with the “Hard Winter” discussion.

Fars News Agency has previously addressed this issue in a report entitled “The narrative of Europe’s cold winter from the language of foreign media and institutions/ Europe’s gas shortage will continue until 2025”.

But after raising this issue, some domestic media claimed that a hard winter will happen to Iran, not Europe. Of course, Iran’s gas shortage in the coming winter is a reality, but it cannot be compared to the gas crisis of European countries.

In fact, the difference between the winter of Iran and Europe is the difference between gas shortage and gas crisis. But in order to compare their losses in facing the problem of harsh winter, it is not bad to compare the per capita economic losses of the gas crisis in Iran and Europe.

According to the Bruegel report (Figure 1), the cost of paying energy subsidies by European countries to protect consumers is estimated at 1000 billion dollars. This cost is independent of the damage caused to EU industries, which the gas crisis has led to their closure.

With a rough calculation according to the statistics of the Energy Exchange and considering the price of each liter of diesel equivalent to 0.78 cents and each liter of fuel oil equivalent to 0.47 cents, the amount of damage to Iran from the burning of liquid fuel in power plants and major industries, the limitation in the supply of gas to petrochemicals and the reduction of industrial production , a total of “maximum” 15 billion dollars has damaged Iran’s economy.

Taking into account the population of 600 million people in European countries and 85 million people in Iran, the per capita economic loss of the gas crisis is calculated as 1666 dollars per European person and 176 dollars per Iranian person, respectively (Figure 2).

In other words, it can be said that the cost of Europe’s harsh winter is 10 times that of Iran’s winter. It should be noted that in the European calculations, the amount of damage caused by the closure of industries was not included, while this figure was calculated in Iran’s damage.
