Core i9 13980HX laptop processor in Cinebench, faster than Threadripper 2990WX

MSI recently sent two new laptops to Jarrod’s Tech YouTube page for review. These two laptops are GE78 Raider and GT77 Titan models, two flagship laptops equipped with GeForce RTX 4090 graphics card and 24-core Core i9 13980HX processor, and their performance results were also published in Cinebench R23. As mentioned, these two laptop devices are engineering examples, and of course their technical performance is not going to be much different from the final model.

These laptops support MSI’s 250W Overdrive technology. With this technology, the input energy of the laptop is shared between the processor and the graphics card. Both laptops are equipped with Max-P versions of the RTX 4090 graphics card with the highest power consumption, and their power consumption reaches up to 175 watts.

Although the two laptops haven’t been released yet, Jarrod has posted the Core i9 13980HX’s Cinebench R23 performance results without a hitch. This processor was able to get a single-core score of 2135 and a multi-core score of 30498. According to the chart below, this processor is the fastest processor available for laptops to date.

The Core i9 13980HX processor is a 24-core processor (8P+16E) and the silicon used for it is exactly the same silicon used in the Core i9 13900K desktop processor. Even though the i9 13980HX is a 24-core laptop processor, it scored higher than the 32-core desktop Ryzen Threadripper 2990WX in Cinebench R23. The desktop version of this processor has a thermal power of 125 watts, and at a frequency of 5.8 GHz, its consumption reaches 253 watts. On the other hand, the consumption of the 13980HX processor is limited to 175/55 watts and its maximum frequency is 5.6 GHz.
