Cyprus: We will not fall into Erdogan’s trap

The Cypriot president said on Wednesday that Cyprus could not fall into the trap of rhetoric related to the Turkish president’s review of the historical facts he has adopted to serve his purposes, according to the Fars News Agency International Group.
“Cyprus can not fall into the trap of the Turkish president’s rhetoric to serve his goals,” Cypriot President Nikos Anastasiades told reporters, according to the Cypriot Mail. “What you are witnessing from Turkey is against international law and against the UN Charter.”
“The Cypriot president referred to the dispute over Turkey’s exclusive economic zone in the Aegean Sea as” unacceptable behavior. “
“We call this a review of historical facts,” he said, referring to the Turkish foreign minister’s remarks on the Varosha region. “A great idea based solely on the political aspirations of the Turkish president.”
Turkey invaded and occupied the northern part of the island of Cyprus in 1974. In that year, the government of Archbishop Makarios, the then President of Cyprus, was overthrown in a military coup, and Turkey deployed its army units in the north of the country, citing its position as a guarantor of Cyprus’s sovereignty. This led to the division of the island of Cyprus into northern and southern parts, and in fact Turkish and Greek. Currently, the land ownership crisis is one of the main crises between the two sides.
The Varosha region has been evacuated since 1974, when Cyprus became part of Turkey and Greece, and has remained an uninhabited area ever since. The city of Varosha has been considered a military zone for 47 years and no one has the right to visit it under UN resolutions, but Turkish and Turkish Cypriot officials have decided to reopen the zone.
The United Nations is calling for control of the region. Turkey is the only country that recognizes Turkish Cyprus. In a recent statement, the United Nations deplored Turkey’s unilateral actions, which run counter to previous Security Council resolutions and statements, and called for the immediate reversal of this decision, which is exacerbating tensions in the region.
