Emphasis on the sovereign right of UN members to manage and control their conventional weapons

According to Fars News Agency’s Foreign Policy Group, the first content meeting of the Conventional Ammunition Working Group within the framework of the United Nations, with the presence of the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs and representatives of member countries, began on June 2, 1401 for a week.
At the beginning of the meeting, Majid Takht Ravanchi, Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, explained the positions and views of the Islamic Republic of Iran on this issue.
Referring to the vital danger of weapons of mass destruction, the Permanent Representative of our country stated that the approach of the international community should be cautious in relation to conventional weapons and ammunition. Because the latter are required for the legitimate defense of member states under Article 51 of the UN Charter.
This senior diplomat of our country emphasized that in the security and safety of conventional weapons and ammunition, this issue should be considered.
Emphasizing the need to respect the powers of the group, he said that any monitoring and evaluation of the management of conventional weapons and ammunition is part of the sovereign rights of member countries, and in the technical dimension, adopting a comprehensive approach to this issue is very important. In this regard, international cooperation should complement and support the national implementation of the commitments through the provision of financial, technical and technological assistance. Also, national rules and regulations should not conflict with such cooperation.
Rejecting any unilateral coercive action and emphasizing the lack of a final working group document with non-universal documents, Takht-e Ravanchi supported the consensus approach to deciding on this document.
It is worth noting that the Open Working Group, after holding three main rounds of negotiations and several interim meetings, will submit its final report in 2023 to the UN General Assembly for consideration and approval.
