Ethereum roadmap for 2024 published; What changes await the biggest blockchain?

Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has just updated the blockchain network’s roadmap for 2024. As it can be seen, the outlook of the Ethereum network is slightly different from last year, which shows the clarification of the technical path of this blockchain.

To Report Cointelegraph has published Ethereum’s 2024 roadmap with an image and a brief description in the form of one Post He published on social network X (former Twitter). The content of this roadmap shows that Ethereum’s focus for 2024 will still be on 6 main components.

These 6 components that make up the ethereum network landscape include merge, serge, eskerge, verge, purge and spelerge, which respectively and briefly focus on reaching an optimal consensus based on proof of stake, increasing the capacity to process transactions per second on ethereum rollups. , solving the concerns related to the focus on the design based on the proof of stake of the network, simplifying the block verification process, simplifying the protocol and reducing the costs of participating in the network, and finally solving the possible problems and summing up the work in the last stage, which is Splurge.

It’s worth noting that not all of these steps and improvements will be implemented in 2024, and this map has been updated ahead of the start of the new year to describe changes in the Ethereum network landscape.

Ethereum’s complete roadmap for 2024.

Buterin says that as Ethereum’s technical path becomes clearer, the roadmap has changed less than last year.

Updating Marj and its related processes is mentioned as one of the key components of the roadmap, which aims to maintain consensus in Ethereum’s proof-of-stake blockchain in a simple and flexible way. The September 2022 Marj update was performed, and as a result, the Ethereum mainnet was merged with its proof-of-stake version, the Beacon Chain. One of the important and obvious changes after this update is the sharp reduction in energy consumption in the Ethereum blockchain after abandoning the old and high-consumption model based on proof of work.

One of the key concepts and parts of the Ethereum roadmap is Single Slot Finality. Finality means finalization in the ethereum proof-of-stake network in which it is ensured that a block cannot be changed or removed from the blockchain without burning at least 33% of the total staked ethers. A slot is also a time unit in the Ethereum blockchain, which is equivalent to 12 seconds. In single-slot finalization, the developers are looking to reduce the time required to finalize blocks from the current 15 minutes to 12 seconds (the same slot as proposed), which greatly increases the efficiency of this blockchain in the block verification process.

Buterin says of this key change:

The role of single-slot finalization in the post-Marj era is to increase the strength in the network. It is becoming clear that single-slot finalization is the easiest path to solve many of Ethereum’s weaknesses in the current proof-of-stake design.
