Fahim: Films that don’t tell stories have an expiration date/ “Leila Brothers” is prone to sloganeering.

According to the Fars news agency from the public relations of the Iranian Youth Cinema Association, the third session of the eighth season of Tehran Short Film Hangout, last Monday, April 14, 1402, with the screening of the short fiction films “I am American” directed by Omid Mirzaei, “White Elephants” directed by Jamil Amel Sadeghi and ” Under Eight” directed by Pedram Moghimi, was held at Bahman Cinema Campus in Tehran.

This meeting, like all short film hangout meetings, was accompanied by the screening and review of four short films. The short film “White Winged Horse” directed by Mahyar Mandagh was not shown on the cinema screen due to the problems encountered. At the beginning of the review session, he apologized for this incident while congratulating cinema and short film enthusiasts on the new year of Shamsi and Ramadan.

Mohammad Taqi Fahim, a film critic, as a special expert of the third session, after the screening of the films, sat down to discuss with the directors of the screened films and film enthusiasts and students who were present in cinema hall number 2 and discussed their works from the perspective of symbolism and focus on Storytelling was analyzed and investigated.

At the beginning of his speech, Fahim stated that all three short films screened in the third session of Short Film Hangout are three average short films of cinema. In total, and using the capacities used in all three of them, the outcome of a standard cinema can be drawn in the mind; Because each of the films definitely has different strengths and weaknesses.

Commenting on the solution for the growth of Iranian cinema, guest critic Mehman Patogh said: Iranian cinema will have a bright future with the presence of directors of the Iranian Youth Cinema Association and short films, because a change in some approaches to cinema can be seen, a change and movement towards storytelling cinema. And distance from symbolic cinema, slogan and of course theme-oriented cinema. I remember one of the cinematographers of Barzag Jahan said that if you don’t have a story, don’t make a movie. Turning the cinema into a political platform for conveying the theme to the audience, adding the story to this theme and slogans, is the bane of cinema, while the theme and symbols should be expressed in the process of telling the story.

He continued referring to the movie “Layla Brothers” and said: “Layla Brothers” movie by Saeed Raushi is the biggest example of sloganeering, symbolism and focus on the extreme theme of these days of cinema, which deviates from the narrative line many times and it can be claimed He said that films that are not storytellers have an expiration date.

While emphasizing that storytelling and adherence to the principle of cinema, i.e. story, is difficult in short cinema, Fahim clarified about the status of the three short films of the third session of the short film hangout: All three short films “I am American”, “White Elephants” and “Below “Eight” have stories, but they have used the fixed components of short cinema, which are symbols, metaphors, surprise at the end and defamiliarization, and they have reduced their storytelling streaks. I believe that as long as we try to use screenplays and films as a platform for politics, thought and party, we will fail; Storytelling is related to the emotions of the audience, and if we take the emotion from a work of art, it will not affect the audience.

In the following, Sajdi invited Omid Mirzaei, the writer and director of the short film “I am American”, and started reviewing the short films. He explained the differences between the final output and the initial ideas and script text.

Fahim explained about “I Am American”: this short film is the sum of opposites, it is accompanied by a weak script that focuses a little on the story, but the decoupages and mise-en-scenes are very accurate, the script is conservatively produced, and I don’t know that in the writing Whether it was the same or not, and what effect did the opinion of the investor and the producer have on its becoming a slogan? This short film is not one of the important films in short cinema, but for its director, who has a good future, it definitely brought great experience and lessons that will pave the way for his progress in the future.

Next, Fahim discussed with Mirzaei, the writer and director of “I am American” about the cause and effect and logical relationships of the type of framing and decoupage.

Pedram Moghimi, the director of the short film “Zir Hasht”, was another director who appeared on stage to discuss his short film with Sajdi and Fahim.

The director of “Zir Hasht” explained about the production conditions, the process of writing the script and the selection of his actors for the production, saying that the main line of his script and the point that caused the idea to come to his mind that the name of this work refers to its central idea. And Mohammad Taghi Fahim also talked about the wrong structures of this film in decoupage, which presented the opposite meaning of the script to the audience.

Regarding the continuation of the tradition of surprise at the end and suspense in the short film, which is based on the short film “Zir Hasht”, Fahim stated: One of the problems of the short film is the involvement of the entire film when the event and surprise at the end of the film occurs; There is nothing wrong with this feature in the structure of cinema, but when the surprise and surprise of a natural routine is cut short at the end of all films, it is far from the main rule of cinema; The structure and basic rules of cinema are more receptive to suspense than surprise.

He added to explain the difference between surprise and suspense: surprise means you are walking on the street when suddenly someone hits you with a stick, and suspense means you are walking on the street and you know that a little ahead someone is lurking to hit you; Apprehension and anxiety that creates suspense; Suspense helps the main story flow, but surprise sometimes causes the main story line to be lost and the narrative to be disrupted.

At the end of the short film “White Elephants” directed by Jamil Amel Sadeghi, the last short film of the third session of the eighth season of the short film hangout of Tehran, he said: “White Elephants” is one of the most difficult films of this week in the production process, and of course it receives a lot of criticism. For example, the narrative line of the story and the literary structure that it intends does not fit the type of direction and does not fit, the film wants to create a poetic atmosphere in a surreal context, but in the production structure, it has not been able to succeed and does not bring the audience with it. .

The eighth season of the short film hangout in cooperation with Bahman Sabz Cultural Institute, Roish Broadcasting, every Monday, except for official holidays, from 15:30 to 17:30 with the screening of short works and a review session with the audience of short films at Bahman Cinema Campus. .
