First meeting of supporters of the UN Charter in New York



The group was established with the aim of upholding the principles of the UN Charter, such as equality of sovereignty of all countries, peaceful settlement of international disputes, non-use of threats and use of force in international relations, non-interference in the internal affairs of 18 countries. Is.
The members of this group are 18 countries: Iran, Venezuela, Algeria, Cuba, Russia, Syria, China, Nicaragua, Angola, Belarus, Cambodia, North Korea, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Lao, Palestine, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Bolivia.
The group will be chaired each year by a member based on geographical divisions, with Venezuela chairing this year. Of course, the next leader of this group has not been determined yet.
The group’s motto, agreed upon by all members, emphasizes the centrality of the principles of the UN Charter, their universality, multilateralism and the need to adapt the actions of countries to the spirit and terms of the Charter.
The Friendship Group of Supporters of the Charter of the United Nations is scheduled to meet at the level of the Permanent Representatives of the Members of the United Nations every three months and at the level of Ministers every year on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
It is said that holding side meetings, presenting resolutions and coordinating positions on various issues are on the group’s agenda.
This year, on the sidelines of the 76th UN General Assembly, the first meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the Charter Supporters Group was held and Reza Najafi, Acting Deputy Minister for Legal and International Affairs and Director General for Peace and Security, represented Iran at the meeting. Venezuela arrived in New York.
This year’s meeting was short due to the conditions and limitations caused by the Covid 19 pandemic and with the limited presence of members.
The members of the meeting read their statement after the official speech and taking a souvenir photo.
In their statement, the member states stressed the need to respect the principles of the UN Charter, to strive to uphold and respect those principles, and to be multilateral.
They expressed concern over the spread of unilateralism and arbitrary interpretations of the UN Charter and called for the development of a friendship group by inviting other UN member states to accede to it by the Venezuelan Foreign Minister, as the rotating chair of the friendship group. .
