GeForce GTX 1080 Ti in 2021: Is It Worth Buying?

Study time: 3 Minutes

Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1080 Ti is the flagship of the Pascal gaming graphics card, which launched in early 2017 for $ 700. At the time, this was too much for a gaming graphics card; But since then the situation has changed a lot.

In this article, we are going to take a look at the performance of the GTX 1080 Ti graphics card in 2021. Despite its high price (both at launch and now), this graphics card has acceptable gaming performance thanks to its powerful processor and large 11 GB memory.

Good performance at 1440p resolution

If we take a look at the benchmarks of newer graphics cards such as the RTX 3070 Ti, RTX 3080 Ti and Radeon RX 6600 XT, we find that the GTX 1080 Ti still has great potential at 1440p resolution with an average frame rate of 93 in 12 games.

This average frame rate is 6% higher than the Radeon RX 5700 XT but 18% lower than the RX 6700 XT. Compared to today’s $ 700 graphics card, the RTX 3080 and RX 6800 XT, the GTX 1080 Ti is more than 60 percent weaker, which makes perfect sense given its four-year-old age.

Test system specifications

The test system includes a Ryzen 9 5950X processor and 32 GB of DDR4-3200 RAM. In this test, the performance of the GTX 1080 Ti graphics card in 1080p, 1440p and 2160p resolutions is compared with different graphics cards.

Faster than the RX 5700 XT

Below is a comparison chart of the GTX 1080 Ti with three RTX 2060 S, RX 5700 XT and RX 5600 XT in 31 games on average. As we said, the GTX 1080 Ti is about 6% faster than the RX 5700 XT at 1440p. The difference with the RTX 2060 Super graphics card is about 20%. In short, the GTX 1080 Ti performs very well at 1440p resolution.

In the middle of 2021, the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics card performed very well. Thanks to 11 GB of memory, this graphics card maintains its competitiveness well and can support large HD textures. Some say that Nvidia is deliberately weakening and obsolete its older graphics cards with driver updates; At least that was not the case with the beloved Pascal family flagship, and the card was well-suited to all new games.

Price and availability, Achilles heel of GTX 1080 Ti

The biggest drawback of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti in 2021 is its price and availability. Second-hand GTX 1080 Ti graphics cards are now priced at around $ 600, which is only $ 100 less than the MSRP price four years ago. For this price, you can get the RTX 2070 and RTX 2070 Super graphics cards, and for an extra $ 50, you can get attractive RT and DLSS technologies.

In general, buying a “used” GTX 1080 Ti graphics card at this price is not worth it. Yes, it’s much better than the $ 800 RX 5700 XT, but it’s only $ 200 more expensive because of its better mining performance. If you have a GTX 1080 Ti, you may want to consider replacing it with a Radeon RX 6600 XT. The RX 6600 XT is priced at around $ 600 (depending on the geography) and is one of the best alternatives to the GTX 1080 Ti.

What do you think about the performance of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti in 2021 compared to its competitors? Do you think the second-hand models of this graphics card are worth buying at this price? Be sure to share your views with us.
