How can parents protect their children from inappropriate media content?

According to the Fars News Agency TV reporter, Hasna Afshar, a child psychologist, appeared in the Panj Sima studio on the 27th of Bahman and talked about raising children in the media age in an interview with the anchor of Salam Tehran.

Afshar said: “The discussion of animations and their impact on the growth process of our children is of great importance.” We may have seen how children, while watching a cartoon, get lost in it and look at it carefully. This somehow shows the great impact these contents have on the child.

He added: On average, every child is exposed to screens for about 4 hours. Looking at the screen too much can affect children’s brain waves. In addition to that, the content that the child watches is also discussed.

Afshar stated: It can be seen that children gradually follow their example after seeing different content on TV. Therefore, if a child is exposed to violent or inappropriate content, he will learn it very easily.

He further said: Many parents play cartoons and animations for their children with different goals and reasons. Some want to entertain their child, others do it for educational purposes, such as teaching a language or a specific skill. But due to all these reasons, there is a little neglect. Because this process is not always controlled and most of the time parents are not involved in it.

He added: We should know that children’s cartoons and animations are tools for conveying different messages. Many big and powerful animation companies in the world do not necessarily create their content with good intentions. Therefore, we see animations that, while beautiful and catchy, are in conflict with our culture as an Iranian family.

Afshar stated: We must be careful about the messages that are transmitted to our children through the media. As a parent, we have to play the role of watcher. Therefore, just like a watchman, we should keep an eye on our children without conflict and extreme control, so that we can guide them in the right direction.

He added: We have to check different animations and measure their suitability for our child. We should be aware that just as we worry about our child’s physical food, we should monitor his mental food in the form of the contents he is exposed to.
