How does the lowering of the Rhine river reduce economic growth in Germany?

According to the report of the International Economic Group of Fars News Agency, quoted by Reuters, while the German economy is facing problems such as stagnation and lack of energy carriers, the companies of this country have recently faced a new problem of lack of rainfall.

For weeks, the temperature in Germany has been rising and we have seen less rainfall in this country in the summer season, which has lowered the water level of the Rhine river and caused serious problems in water transportation in this country.

On the one hand, we are witnessing a delay in the transportation of cargoes, and on the other hand, the transportation fare in this important European river has increased fivefold.

The Rhine River, which stretches from the Swiss Alps through the industrial centers of Germany to the North Sea, is one of the main routes for the transportation of basic goods from grains to petrochemical products and coal in Europe.

Economic experts have predicted that the disruption created in the transportation in the river due to the lowering of the Rhine’s water level can reduce half a percent of Germany’s total economic growth for this year; For example, barges with a length of 135 meters or more that load iron ore from Rotterdam, Holland and transfer it to steel plants in Germany have to load with only 30-40% of their capacity due to the low water level.
