Hyundai returns to Japan / Electric car market to take over Hyundai?

According to Tejarat News, Hyundai has announced that after 12 years of suspension in Japan, it now intends to resume sales in this country. This has happened before due to Hyundai’s low sales figures in Japan. But now, with increasing demand for electric vehicles, Hyundai plans to resume sales in Japan. The electric car market is now in the hands of Toyota.

Hyundai plans to account for 10% of total electric vehicle sales by 2025. Nexus electric hydrogen chassis and Ionic 5 electric crossover are the main cars that Hyundai intends to sell. Hyundai dealership in Japan has not yet set a specific target for its sale. It will provide more information when it starts receiving online orders in May.

According to the report Reuters, Hyundai’s first attempt to capture the Japanese market was in 2001, when it left the market after selling only 15,000 cars. The sharp increase in demand for electric vehicles could be another opportunity for older companies such as Hyundai, Volkswagen or Atlantis (the maker of Peugeot).

Although only about 20,000 electric cars were sold in Japan last year, they still doubled from a year earlier, despite a general decline in car sales. Hyundai CEO apologizes in a video for the company’s 12-year absence in Japan. Currently, only 600 Hyundai cars are still on the streets of Japan. Hyundai focuses on online sales. The company is working with a car-sharing service company and an insurance company to enable car rental for Hyundai car owners.
