Elena Kovalskaya, artistic director of the Mehirhold Theater in Moscow, has resigned in protest of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Elena Kovalskaya The artistic director of the Mehirhold Theater in Moscow announced that he could no longer receive government salaries in good conscience.

“It is impossible to work for a killer and get paid,” Kovalskaya wrote in a Facebook post on February 25.

The Mehirhold Theater is one of several state-owned theaters in Russia, many of which date back to the Soviet era. Of course, the Mehirhold Theater was founded in 1999. However, the Russian government provides almost all of the budget for its artistic staff and actors as employees on the government’s payroll.

The theater is named after Soviet director and experimental teacher Vesvolud Mehirhold. Mehirhold was arrested, tortured, and subsequently shot by a firing squad during Stalin’s rule on February 2, 1940.
