Veteran cinema and television actor Reza Tavakli said in a conversation with Mehr reporter about his latest activities: These days I have a script in my hand and I am studying it to make a decision. Before that, and in the interval of about two years after the series “The Summons”, I did not have any other work in cinema and television and was mostly busy with the daily affairs of my life.
This actor said about his more prominent presence in television series than in movies: “Years ago, I had an experience of being in a movie project and I remember my colleagues in that project saying how is it possible that you are not in movies with this level of acting ability and potential?” ? Of course, I am not talking about defining myself, but rather reminding that the abilities of my generation and those like me are disappearing and we have not been able to pass it on to the next generations. As for why I am not in movies, I really don’t know what happened, the simplest answer is that I am not offered roles in movies.
He added: I think that the courage and boldness that should be in our filmmakers is not there, and all the conditions around us, from economic conditions to social conditions, have joined hands so that filmmakers take less risks. But I believe that we all have to take risks to reach better situations.
I was tricked to participate in some projects!
This actor continued: I was recently offered to appear in a home series and I had an offer for the “Mannequin” series before. Some of these projects, to invite cooperation, say sentences like only Tavakli can play this role! With the utmost honesty, I sometimes get tricked to participate in these projects and find myself in a special situation. “I’m dying for you” is the title of my latest experience on the home channel directed by Abbas Moradian, and I think I enter the story at the right point and have an effective presence in the story.
Emphasizing the need to talk about the conditions governing acting in cinema, television and home network, Tavakli said: I am saddened by these difficult conditions and this is not unique to me either. Many children of my age are upset about this situation because they could not and cannot get what they deserve. Conditions that are favorable for all our artists have not yet been created in this field. We have traveled a path until today that ended in nowhere.
This veteran actor also said about the reactions of the people in the alleys and streets: I swear to God that if these people were not selfless and art lovers, maybe we would not be in this field until today. Still, when people see me in the street and the market, they ask if you are on TV this year during Ramadan. Because people seem to have good Ramadan memories of my appearance on TV. But why directors don’t come to me, I think the reason is clear. The cinema has a clear task!
All over the world, original artists are an opportunity
He continued: All over the world, committed and original artists whose performances have connected with the lower layers of society are considered an opportunity. These artists, especially these actors, are an opportunity for our society. But what happens when a society cannot use its famous artists or even prominent sports figures to achieve its cultural and artistic goals? How come we don’t see book promotion by any prominent artist or person during the book fair? All over the world, people love their artists because they have shed tears with us and laughed with us. People who love Iran also love Iranian artists. We have to get over the political games.
About his memories of people’s encounters with him, Tavakli said: Some time ago, I had to enter a government organization for an administrative job. When I passed through the entrance door, the staff were talking to each other. “That actor has come!” (Laughs) They still had enough of negative roles and dodoze in their minds, that’s how they introduced me to each other. For example, in the series “Zirzmin” or “Alchemy” I had roles that were often mean and in the end they did not get any money or fame! Even though I never got money in real life!

He continued: People usually judge us with our roles. Among the roles I had, the series “He was an angel” had its own story. May God have mercy on Hassan Joharchi, I remember one day we were rehearsing dialogues with Hassan Joharchi on Niayesh highway, when the stage manager came and said, Mr. Tavakoli, this lady has something to do with you. I was surprised. When I went to see what he was doing, I saw that a lady had come several nights and was persistent to see me. When I asked what is the card? He said that my wife is not on the road and you can come to our house for two hours and advise her to stop her work! (laughs)
This actress continued: I explained that I am an actress and those who were giving advice were the roles I was playing. It is a very important achievement for an actor that the audience believes him in the form of a character. Sometimes I say in private, God, what have I done that these people are kind to me with such knowledge?
Tavakli said about the problems in determining the salary of veteran actors: This is a problem that happens to many of us. Recently, I worked with a veteran actress, and I noticed behind the camera that she was constantly shaking her head and feeling sorry. When I asked the reason, he said, unfortunately, after 70 years, we are still running. I asked how? I understand that the discussion is related to the contract and the amount received. The fact is that artists have never been successful in agreeing on financial matters. I don’t care about that number of exceptions, but my point is that most of us, when we enter the production room of a project, we encounter a businessman! It is natural that our tongue is closed in front of a professional!
He added: “The profession does not have a pension, and by the way, due to the irregularities in our profession, some of my colleagues suffer from heart and brain complications.” It is a fact that we do not have the ability to discuss and bargain over financial matters. The fact is that most actors do not earn that much, and of course it is not customary to announce numbers.
In the end, this veteran actor said: It is true that sometimes a role is more important to me than its salary, but there are times when we have ideal conditions to create a new character. I am not one to complain and I will do my own work as long as I can and have the expertise. I never leave less for my work. I have lived in such a way that I don’t need anyone.
