Intercity and metro trains do not have third party insurance

In an interview with Iran Economist, Majid Mashalchi said about the letter of the Minister of Economy to the Minister of Roads and Urban Development that urban and suburban rail fleets should purchase third-party insurance policies: the rail fleet, including suburban trains and metro trains, has so far been protected against accidents. Regarding the third party, they only bought liability insurance, which although the insurance policy is cheap, but the responsibility of the insurance company is very limited for the accidents caused to the third party.
He said: According to the resolution of the Supreme Council of Insurance, it was decided that the rail fleet, whether inside or outside the city, as well as the passenger and cargo fleet, must purchase a third-party insurance policy, and in this context, the tariffs proposed by the specialized insurance commission regarding third-party accidents in the rail fleet Determined and notified and is in force.
The deputy official of Central Insurance stated: At the same time, the Ministry of Roads has one, two points regarding the third-party insurance of the railway fleet, which is, firstly, what is the damage schedule and how is the contract between railway companies and insurance companies concluded, in this context, a meeting with Central Insurance and two A meeting was held with the insurers’ syndicate to extract the guidelines and to include the costs of buying third-party insurance policies in the next year’s budget of the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development or Metro, but anyway, this cost shows itself in the price of train and subway tickets.
According to Meshalachi; Insurance companies collect the cost of third-party insurance from railway and metro companies and they also compensate for it by increasing the ticket price. Of course, this issue has not yet been implemented, but because it has the approval of the Supreme Council of Insurance, it is valid.
Mashalchi added: There are still discussions between insurance companies and transport companies, and in this context Mr. Dr. Khandozi, the Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance, emphasized in a letter to Mr. Bazerpash, the Minister of Roads and Urban Development that third party insurance should be implemented for rail fleet accidents. Especially since the Arbaeen trip is coming up and the possibility of accidents increases.
He added: Until now, instead of buying third-party insurance policies, railway and metro companies buy liability insurances that cover a small amount if an accident happens, but third-party insurance can pay damages up to 1.2 billion tomans for the death of a third party, while Liability insurance policy is negligible.
According to him; The third party insurance law approved by parliament is mandatory for various fleets, but so far it has not been implemented in the case of railway fleets, and instead of third party insurance, they purchase liability insurance policies with low cost and less commitment, resulting in pressure on the bodily damage fund when Accidents will occur, but if they purchase third party insurance from the rail fleet, these issues will be resolved.
The deputy official of Central Insurance stated: Because the Supreme Council of Insurance has approved the need for third-party insurance coverage for freight and passenger rail fleets, both within the city and outside the city, it is mandatory and should be seen in the 1403 budget bill.
