According to Mehr news agency, the president of Iraq said that the countries of the Middle East should learn from the past and cooperate with each other to achieve security and prosperity.
In an interview with the American channel CNN, “Barham Saleh” said about his country’s relations with Iran: Iran is the main actor in this part of the world. In Iraq, in addition to the long borders with Iran, we have various cultural and social interactions with this country, as well as common security interests.
The president of Iraq noted that a nuclear agreement should be reached with Iran and some kind of reconciliation between Iran and the Arabs should be established. Establishing good relations with Iran is in line with our vital interests. We do not want to return to the days of Saddam Hussein, when we were at war with our neighbors.
Saleh added: “There is no military solution, and we need a diplomatic solution and security arrangements in the Middle East to get out of the current deadlock, so that we can deal with terrorism, which has created a major problem for everyone.”
Barham Saleh stated that Iraq plays a very important role in the field of mediation between the Saudis and Iran at the right time, adding: Several negotiations were held in Baghdad between Iran and other Arab neighbors, and we are witnessing the improvement of the situation in this regard.
He continued: Finally, we have to sit at a table and talk about the problems that exist. This part of the world cannot go on like this. We have oil resources, but at the same time we are facing very serious economic and social challenges. We need infrastructure that can connect our economies. We need joint action against climate change. Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Iran or Turkey alone cannot do these things.
Referring to the developments in Syria, the President of Iraq said: Finally, Syria must return to the arena. We have to find a way to save this country from the chaos it has been in for so long.
Barham Saleh concluded by saying: “While we are focusing on the main headlines of competition between countries in the Middle East, the reality is that there are big challenges facing every country in this part of the world.” We don’t want to go back to where we were part of a fight against each other. We did it and paid a heavy price.
