According to the Mehr news agency, quoting RIA Novosti, the press office of the Russian Pacific Fleet announced that the country will have a joint naval exercise with China and Iran.
The Russian embassy in Tehran had earlier said the exercise was early 2022 It will be held in the waters of the Persian Gulf.
It is also said that at present, a number of ships of the Russian Pacific Fleet are moored in the Iranian port of Chabahar.
This is the second joint exercise by Iran, Russia and China in less than three years. In December 2019, these countries held a similar exercise in the Indian Ocean called the “Maritime Security Belt”.
The previous exercise involved three ships belonging to the Russian Baltic Fleet – a tanker, a passer and a tugboat from Russia, and a destroyer equipped with Chinese-guided missiles, and officials from the three countries stressed the need for continued military cooperation.
Iran and Russia held joint exercises in the Oman Sea and the Indian Ocean in February 1999, and in September 1999, the Iranian navy participated in a part of the Russian naval exercise in the Caspian Sea.
The announcement of a new exercise between the three countries comes as Iranian President Seyed Ebrahim Ra’isi will pay a visit to Russia this week.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian also paid a visit to China last week, during which he stressed the importance of 25 years of strategic partnership and cooperation between the two countries with a win-win approach.
