Iran will remain steadfast to achieve nuclear disarmament

According to IRNA, Reza Najafi, who represented the Islamic Republic of Iran at the commemoration ceremony of the International Day for the Complete Destruction of Nuclear Weapons, while appreciating the holding of this meeting, called the destruction of nuclear weapons a priority and a global commitment and towards the victims of the use of nuclear weapons. He was honored by America in 1954.

The deputy for legal and international affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that nuclear weapons are a real threat to humanity and the risk of its use is greater today than ever. But the nuclear countries have entered the nuclear race by relying on nuclear deterrence and reducing the threshold for the use of these weapons, and even against their commitment, they transfer these weapons to some of their allies. The presence of about 13,000 nuclear warheads shows the danger of nuclear weapons.

Najafi called the withdrawal of the United States from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty and the JCPOA as concrete examples of the country’s non-compliance with its international obligations and said that real nuclear disarmament should be followed after the renewal of the New Start Treaty.

He clarified that the United States at the global level and the Israeli regime at the regional level are the main obstacle to achieving nuclear disarmament, and Iran strongly supports the Non-Aligned Group’s proposal to immediately start negotiations on the Comprehensive Nuclear Weapons Convention. Because nuclear disarmament is a binding legal obligation and is the only guarantee of removing the danger of these weapons.

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs regretted the failure of the 10th Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and called it a sign of the lack of political will of the nuclear countries to achieve disarmament. In this regard, Iran does not consider the idea of reducing nuclear risk to be equivalent to disarming nuclear weapons.

This Foreign Ministry official emphasized the need to hold nuclear countries accountable and the need to force the Zionist regime to disarm nuclear weapons, join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as a non-nuclear member and accept the comprehensive safeguards of the International Nuclear Energy Agency. that the realization of this goal will facilitate the creation of a Middle East free of weapons of mass destruction.
Najafi also added that Iran will remain steadfast in playing its positive role to achieve nuclear disarmament.

According to IRNA, the initial proposal of commemorating the International Day for the Complete Destruction of Nuclear Weapons was proposed by the Islamic Republic of Iran and with the support of the Non-Alignment Group and the approval of the United Nations General Assembly, it was placed on the annual agenda of the Assembly and will be held every year since 2013.

The commemoration of the International Day for the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons was held in the presence of heads of state, foreign ministers and high-ranking officials of the United Nations member states at the organization’s headquarters in New York.
