Iran’s presence in the next round of Astana talks on Syria

The 17th session of the Astana Process talks on Syria is scheduled for December 20 in the Kazakh capital, Nursultan, according to the Russian president’s special envoy for the Middle East and Africa and deputy foreign minister, Fars News Agency reported.

According to the Syrian News Agency “SANA“Russia hopes that the meeting will take place on that date,” Mikhail Bogdanov, the Russian president’s special envoy for the Middle East and Africa and Russia’s deputy foreign minister, told a news conference.

He noted that Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was not scheduled to attend the meeting.

Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tilobardi also announced on Wednesday that a meeting of foreign ministers sponsoring the Astana talks on Syria, attended by Russia, Turkey and Iran, could take place next month. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has not yet responded.

The economic, social, health and epidemiological situation in Syria, international humanitarian aid to Syria, the prospect of a resumption of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva, confidence-building measures, including the exchange of prisoners, the release of hostages and the search for individuals. Missing persons have been cited as the main focus of the talks.

On July 7th and 8th of this year, the city of Nursultan hosted the 16th International Astana Summit in Syria, which was attended by delegations representing Russia, Iran and Turkey, the Syrian government and the Syrian opposition.

The Syrian crisis is one of the most complex international crises in which various regional and trans-regional actors play a role. On the other hand, the growth and proliferation of terrorist groups in West Asia and the creation of conflict in the region have caused the Syrian crisis to be accompanied by humanitarian catastrophes and new political developments.

Accordingly, various countries, including the Islamic Republic of Iran, have always sought to end this crisis. Numerous meetings were also held in Geneva and Astana.
