Iran’s reaction to the destruction of the Kakhovka dam in southern Ukraine


According to the Foreign Policy Group of Fars News Agency, the Spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nasser Kanani, today (Thursday), 18 June, in response to the horrific act of destroying the Kakhovka Dam in southern Ukraine, expressed deep concern about its humanitarian, environmental and economic effects.

The spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated the principled positions of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding its opposition to the war in Ukraine, the destruction of civilian facilities and endangering the lives of civilians and civilians, the adherence of all involved parties to internationally recognized principles, including the protection of the lives of civilians and He asked for the reduction of their pain.

Considering the complexity of the conflicts, Kanani demanded to clarify the dimensions of the incident and to identify the main cause of this disaster.

The Kakhovka Dam on the Dnipro River is a critical infrastructure that holds about 18 cubic kilometers of water in the Kakhovka Reservoir and supplies water to many southern parts of Ukraine and the Crimean Peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in 2014.

The dam also supplies water to the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, which is located in its upper part and is controlled by Russia.

Following this incident, Ukraine pointed the finger at Russia, but Russian President Vladimir Putin, in his first reaction to the incident at the Kakhovka dam in Kherson region, called it a barbaric act organized by Ukraine under the direction of the West. He also said that this action has led to a large-scale environmental and human disaster.
