The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity announced on Tuesday the payment of gas debts to Iran over the next two days, Mehr news agency reported, quoting the official Iraqi news agency (WAA).
According to the report, “Ahmad Musa,” the spokesman for the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity, told Wa’a: “Given that the Ministry of Electricity had announced the need to pay gas debts to Iran for 2020 to the government, parliament and public opinion, and these debts to The reason for not approving the budget was not paid at that time, today we announce that the mentioned debts will be paid in the next two days in order to prevent the reduction of gas injection, and this will be done according to the existing frameworks.
He added: “Iraq’s gas debt problem has accumulated from previous governments and the current government has taken responsibility for it.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Electricity Minister Adel Karim said in early May that the country and Iran had reached an agreement to resume Iranian gas exports and pay Baghdad’s debts to Tehran.
Adel Karim said: “During the trip to Tehran, an agreement was reached with the Iranian side to import gas to Iraq in the summer, and they pledged to equip power plants and power generation units.”
He added: “Baghdad owes gas to Tehran and it was agreed to pay this debt.” We think that the equipment will be well equipped in summer as well as in winter.
“Iraq’s gas imports are in short supply and have become a very popular commodity, and Iraq’s achievement of its needs is an achievement, and we anticipate that the supply of electricity to the citizens will be good during the summer, and we ask the citizens to Ensure good electricity distribution for all to save on consumption.
Karim continued: “Energy production in Iraq is good, but consumption is very high and has increased by more than 600 percent since 2003.”
