Itartas: Russia’s first nuclear torpedo will be operational soon

According to Fars International News Agency, Russian state media have reported that the first set of Russian Poseidon nuclear torpedoes has been produced.

Poseidon is an anti-ship torpedo capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. This weapon was announced for the first time in 2018.

Itartas news agency quoted an unnamed source in the Russian military as saying that Poseidon has passed several tests and has been successful in testing nuclear power.

Of course, Itartas said that the Ministry of Defense of Russia has not yet confirmed these developments.

“The first set of Poseidon bombs has been built and will soon be mounted on the Belgorod nuclear submarine,” the source cited by Tass said.

This torpedo can travel up to 10,000 km underwater and then detonate near the shore, creating a radioactive tsunami. This nuclear torpedo was presented by Russia in 2018. Of course, the first pictures were leaked in 2015.

In a speech in March 2018, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia is developing this torpedo along with some other superweapons. A year later, Russia released a video of its test.

A few months before Putin’s speech, the US military had admitted in a report that Russia was building a nuclear torpedo.

America has activated the satellite network to track such torpedoes, but they are not able to identify these torpedoes under the sea. The Belgorod submarine is 184 meters long and 15 meters wide and can move underwater at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour. The Poseidon supertorpedo is a 24-meter projectile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead.
