John Kerry: The war in Ukraine should not be an excuse to abandon the climate struggle

“Gas must be resupplied to Europe, which has been lost to Russia as a result of a supply cut,” he was quoted as saying at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“For a long time, no one should believe that the Ukraine crisis is an excuse to suddenly build the old kind of infrastructure we had, and we have to be much smarter given the dangers,” he warned.

According to the report, rising energy prices have pushed up inflation in some countries and raised concerns about the recession, as sanctions against Russia, the world’s largest oil and gas producer, have hampered supply.

“There is no room for regression,” Kerry said, referring to a 6 percent increase in greenhouse gas emissions and a 9 percent increase in highly polluting coal consumption.

He stressed that a quick investment in renewable energy technology is the only solution to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees Celsius.

He added: “If we make the right choice, we can win all these struggles; We can do what is necessary given Ukraine and the climate crisis.

“We should not be deceived into believing that this situation is in the game to go back and do what caused the crisis in the first place,” Kerry said.

The Covid-19 pandemic in 2021 canceled a gathering of world political and business elites to attend the Davos summit, and this year’s summit was delayed this month.
