Lavrov: We are disappointed with the US response to the security guarantees

According to Fars News Agency’s International Service, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov confirmed the receipt of the US written response to Moscow’s requests for security guarantees and expressed disappointment at Washington’s non-concession to Moscow.

Russia’s foreign minister said in a letter to Moscow today that the United States had “no positive response to the main concerns contained in the document,” despite weeks of talks with its partners. “It existed, it did not.”

“The main issue is our clear position on the unacceptability of further NATO advance to the east and the deployment of highly destructive weapons that could threaten the territory of the Russian Federation,” Lavrov explained.

According to Lavrov, the document promised by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken following last week’s talks in Switzerland failed to address Russia’s concerns.

Lavrov: In the US letter to Moscow, there is no positive response to the main concerns raised in the Russian document.

“It is important that when our Western partners respond to our proposals, they always call for the implementation of the principles agreed in Euro-Atlantic … and immediately say that this means that NATO has the right to move forward,” Lavrov added. “No country has the right to prevent it.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov had previously said in response to the US response to the Russian document that Russia was currently considering a response to the US and that Putin was evaluating the document.

The Kremlin spokesman said Washington and the US-led military bloc had not fully and fully heeded Russia’s demands.

Peskov: The United States and its allies have not paid enough attention to Russia’s requests for security guarantees.

“There are always prospects for more dialogue, and there should be,” he explained. “It simply came to our notice then.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced on Wednesday evening that Washington had responded in writing to Russia’s proposals for security in Eastern Europe at Russia’s request.

Shortly afterwards, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Groshko confirmed that Jake Sullivan had gone to the Russian Foreign Ministry and handed over the document to the United States.

CNN also reported that NATO was scheduled to submit a separate written response to Moscow.

EU foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell on Thursday morning welcomed the US response to Russia’s proposals for security guarantees, saying: “The diplomatic path is the only lasting solution for the people of Ukraine and the people of Europe. I ask Russia to accept it. “The European Union and the United States are united in this approach.”

About two months ago, the American media began spying on the possibility of a Russian invasion of Ukraine earlier this year, escalating tensions in Eastern Europe. Russia has strongly denied the allegations, but insisted that continued artillery fire by Ukrainian forces against the Russian-speaking Autonomous Region would provoke a Moscow backlash.

It was on December 17 that the Russian Foreign Ministry released a draft of security agreements with the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). These guarantees specifically reject the further expansion of the NATO alliance to the east and the entry of the countries of the former Soviet Union into it. The draft also allows the bloc to withdraw from any military activity in Ukraine, other Eastern European countries, as well as in the Caucasus and Central Asia.
