Leading writers have backed a ban on an Israeli publisher by Sally Rooney

According to the Fars News Agency’s Book and Literature Reporter The Guardian, Camilla Shamsi, Monica Ali and China Millwr are among those who signed the letter, organized by Artists for Palestine.

Leading writers such as Camilla Shamsi, Monica Ali, and China Mill have endorsed Sally Rooney’s decision not to sell translation rights to an Israeli publisher, describing it as “an exemplary response to the growing injustices inflicted on Palestinians.”

Rooney turned down an offer to sell Hebrew translation rights in his new novel, The Beautiful World, Where Are You?

The Irish best-selling novelist said last month that he supported the Boycott, Expropriation, Sanctions (BDS) movement, which works to “end international support for Israeli oppression of the Palestinians and pressure Israel to abide by international law.” It is not right to work with an Israeli company “that does not openly distance itself from apartheid and does not support the rights of the Palestinian people by the United Nations.”

While the two major publishers of the Israeli book chain subsequently announced that they were pulling Rooney books off their shelves, the novelist movement is now supported by 70 authors and publishers. In a letter compiled by Artists for Palestine UK, the cultural network of pro-Palestinian artists, letters from Kevin Berry, Rachel Kouchner, Jeff Dyer, Pankaj Mishra, Carmen Callill and Ahad Swift stated that they supported Rooney’s decision.
