MacBook Air M2 benchmarks: Faster than the base Mac Pro model

Last month, during the WWDC 2022 event, Apple unveiled the Apple M2 processor and two new products equipped with it, i.e. MacBook Pro M2 and MacBook Air M2. While the release of the MacBook Pro M2 started a few weeks ago, the MacBook Air M2 has not yet been officially released and its pre-sale just started yesterday and it is scheduled to be released on July 15. In the new generation of MacBook Pro, the M2 processor had improved technical performance and charging compared to the M1 processor, and now we have to see how this processor works in the new generation of MacBook Air.
MacBook Air M2 performance on Geekbench 5
Recently, the Twitter page of Mr. Macintosh has published Geekbench 5 benchmark results of a MacBook Air M2 with 16GB memory. The M2 processor in this device was able to get a single-core score of 1899 and a multi-core score of 8965. The benchmark results of the MacBook Air M2 are very close to the MacBook Pro M2, and on paper, both devices offer the same level of technical performance. But the thing about the MacBook Pro is that it is equipped with a cooling fan, while the new MacBook Air is passively cooled without a fan. For this reason, MacBook Pro performs better in heavy and long-term processing.
By comparing the MacBook Air M2 benchmarks, we find that this device can beat the base model Mac Pro with an 8-core Intel Xeon W processor. To see just how big the problem is, juxtapose the $1,200 base price of the new MacBook Air with the $5,000 base price of the Mac Pro. Of course, it is not right to directly compare the M2 processor with an Intel Xeon processor, but it can be said that Apple is on the right track.
At this time, we have no information about the performance of the new MacBook Air in other benchmarks or the internal components of this device. We have to wait until the official release of this device to be able to say with certainty whether this device is better or the MacBook Pro M2. We know that the 256GB model of the MacBook Pro has only one 256GB chip instead of two 128GB chips, and its memory speed is half that of the 256GB model of the M1, and we don’t yet know if this is the case with the new MacBook Air.
